There is a controversy if Neem seeds are orthodox, intermediate or recalcitrant. There
are reports that seeds of Asia origin are more or less recalcitrant, while those of
African provenances as orthodox.
Others have described the seeds as short-lived. Scientists at Millennium Seed Bank,
U.K. were certain that they have seeds of Asian origin kept for more than ten years
with very good viability, personal communication. Little success has  so far been
achieved to understand the physiology of Neem seed and techniques to maintain
viability for short to medium term. The claims have to be authenticated, provenances
and genotypes may have to be identified and solutions provided to overcome this
constraint.
